So, I did nothing last summer. Well, I won’t say nothing – but I didn’t go anywhere fun. I was feeling down in the dumps after my divorce was finalized, was still budgeting as tightly as I could, and had gained a dreaded 20 pounds AFTER losing all my baby weight.

But I’ve vowed to myself that I’m going to change for this summer. I’m in a much better place in my life right now. I want to get out of my hometown and do something fun – live a little. And I definitely want to take my girls on a vacation as well.

I’ve looked into cruises, and am almost positive that I’ll be booking one in a few short weeks, to take during the summer. I’ll be leaving from Charleston, SC and heading to the Bahamas. But now that we’re talking tropical weather...I’m going to have to get bathing suit ready (gulp)!

Through hard work, I was able to lose 10 pounds before the holidays simply by getting off my butt and into the gym. I still have another 10 pounds to go – and I feel like I’ve reached a plateau. The cold weather really puts a damper on my wanting to go to the gym. It’s really hard to get two kids ready and out the door after a full day of work. Plus, I’ve just started a new relationship. We’re still in that “we need to see each other as much as possible” stage. And in that stage, there’s a lot of eating – going out, pizza runs, movie popcorn, white chocolate crème brûlée strawberries (be jealous) – you name it.

So while I don’t want to cut back on my “fun” eating with my family – I’ve realized I have to do something about what I eat during the day. I can’t tell you how easy it is to run by and grab a spicy chicken biscuit, hash brown and orange juice for breakfast. Or how tempting square pizza is from the school cafeteria. But it is so, so unhealthy for me to eat that on a daily basis. I simply don’t have the time in the morning to make a nutritious breakfast or lunch… so I needed something that I could grab on the go.

And that’s when my co-worker suggested Slim-Fast. I drink a milk chocolate shake for breakfast, sneak in some grapes or an apple during class change in the morning, eat a Slim-Fast meal bar for lunch, eat some carrots or celery during my planning period – and then a normal 500 calorie meal for dinner. Oh, and drink an ungodly amount of water during the day, lol. But this is easy, and simple, and tasty – and I know I can accomplish my loss of 10 more pounds with just a little help.

So wish me luck, folks. I’ve got 3 short months to lose 10 pounds. I can do it – I know I can. I’ll feel better about myself, be healthier, and might actually pose for some pictures wearing a bathing suit!

I've blogged before about CSN Stores, and I've loved working with them. I've been able to give away a lot of really cool things to my readers thanks to CSN Stores. This time, however, they are giving little old me a nifty gift card! I'm so tickled, but am not really sure what to choose. I looked at the flat screen TV stands, so I don't have to worry about the girls pulling my TV into the floor. But I'm also in the market for a new Christmas tree, since I just found out my roof leaked during a big storm we had here over the summer. Giveaway Update

Some of you may have noticed that I no longer have a certain giveaway on my blog. Whenever I do giveaways, it is because a company (large or small) has contacted me, or their PR firm has contacted me. 50% of the time, I receive the same "prize" that is being given away - but most of the time I just like to give you guys free stuff, and companies some "free" PR.

The giveaway that I had posted, the PR firm contacted me, offering a giftcard for both a reader and myself. I jumped at the chance, wrote the post, sent it for approval, and got the green light. Shortly before the giveaway ended, I was contacted by the real PR firm of that company, letting me know that, not only has their entire brand name changed, but they are not doing any form of blogging PR at this moment.

Say what?

So of course I emailed my original contact. No response. Nothing. Nada.

And I'm fuming mad. Not only am I mad, but confused, as well. It's not like this person gained anything from offering this giveaway. My readers weren't sent to a certain blog/webpage, they didn't have to "like" anything on Facebook, or follow on Twitter. I didn't give away any personal information (thank goodness). I suppose it was just someone playing a mean prank.

But I've learned my lesson. I'll be sure to do my research before hand on ANY and ALL giveaways that I post.

Remember being a kid trying to learn to ride a bike? You teetered back and forth on your training wheels, and when your dad finally took them off you lost your balance and inevitably fell, repeatedly. This potentially dangerous scenario is all too common and it scares many kids into not wanting to ride.

GlideBikes, an American manufacturer of the popular European balance bike, has the solution to this problem. A balance bike is a smaller, lower bicycle (starting at 12” seat height) with no pedals that is constructed in a way that will allow children starting at two years old to learn two-wheel balance. Kids learn to balance safely without tears or training wheels and can start slowly by “walking” the bike without pedals getting in the way. Paper to Pearls Giveaway

Paper to Pearls was the unexpected outcome of a trip that Voices for Global Change president Barbara Moller made to northern Uganda in the fall of 2005. Barbara went as one of a team of trainers on a U.S. State Department project to create a coalition of local municipal officials and civil society leaders that would lobby and advocate nationally and internationally on behalf of the region.

Joyce Laker, one of the participants in the training, invited Barbara to visit two displaced persons camps where she had started a small beading project. Utilizing a grant she had obtained from CARE International, Joyce had recently brought a trainer from Kampala, the Ugandan capital, to train women in the two camps in how to make necklaces from recycled paper. She thought that sales of necklaces on the streets of Gulu, the local town, would be a way to help the women. The money wouldn't be much, but it would be something.

Barbara, however, saw it differently. What she saw was an opportunity to provide significant income for the women if she could create a market for their work. Two months later Paper to Pearls was born. Although starting with no experience in micro-enterprise or retail sales, Barbara saw the initiative as a natural extension of the mission of Voices for Global Change―to help give a "voice" to those who have traditionally been silent. In this case, by helping lift desperately marginalized women out of poverty, it would be giving them a voice in their future and the future of their families and communities.

What started with 40 women between the two camps has grown to include 125 women in eight camps and three cooperatives in Gulu. We invite you to visit our Project Impact page to gain an understanding of what having a consistent source of income has meant in the lives of these women. With the income they are earning, they are not only transforming their lives but also gaining pride, dignity and hope for the future. They are silent no more.

Their travel documents are taken from them and many times they are told their family will be hurt if they do not cooperate. In a state of malnutrition, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, unsanitary living conditions, forced abortions and HIV, these women and children work day after day in highly guarded facilities with no hope for their future. This cannot go on any longer.

Justice Juels was birthed out of a desire to be a voice for those who do not have one. A voice for those women and children who wait silently for someone to speak up on their behalf and bring forth justice. Someone who will take a stand, someone who will fight for them. If we do not speak up, then who will?

Shoals Creek Farm Review & Giveaway

My coworker introduced me to Shoals Creek Farm and their homemade goat's milk products. Their soaps are made in small batches using the cold processing method. They are poured into homemade wooden molds and allowed to cure 4-6 weeks. Only high quality essential oils and fragrance oils are used in their soaps. Let me just say this - they smell fabulous! I'm the proud owner of Monkey Farts (a yummy banana chocolate blend) soap, and have used their Pink Sugar hand lotion. My skin is always so dry during the winter, yet the lotion makes them soft - and not the slightest bit greasy feeling.

Swagbucks Review

About a month ago I signed up for Swagbucks after seeing it on another blog. I had no idea what it really did. Well, after playing around with it, I decided to write a little more on the subject.

First off - if you are a "googler", sign up! I am always using google, and this way whenever I search, I have the opportunity to win. On a daily basis, I'll usually win between 2-6 Swagbucks just by searching via their engine (backed by google and ask.com) instead of regular google.

Second - you can earn Swagbucks by shopping online. So when I ordered something from Walmart's website, I just clicked though Swagbucks first and earned that way.

Third - any friend YOU get to sign up, you earn 1 buck for each buck they earn!

Overall, I've been able to win about $200 in giftcards to different places online, which I'll use for Christmas shopping and for giveaways on this blog (ahem, $25 Target giftcard!). I'm all about getting stuff for free!

The teacher in me did a jump for joy when I found this site! I was able to pull up great resources to use in my classroom, along with quizzes and lesson plans.

The mom in me also realized how awesome this would be for my girls. They LOVE watching me on the computer, and are forever trying to play, too. Now, we can snuggle up and read a book together (without the pages being eaten or slobbered on).
